Starting a new workout routine and sticking to it is harder than any exercise, whether you’re starting for the first time or trying again after several failed attempts. The pain and mental trials that come from switching from an out-of-shape lifestyle are often enough to dissuade beginners from carrying on to complete their fitness goals. Before you commit to a regular exercise schedule, prepare yourself with some essential tips for staying on your new workout routine and strive for greatness beyond your goals!

Incorporate the Outdoors

If you love working or sitting outside when the weather is beautiful, consider integrating the great outdoors into your workout routine! Block out time to take a walk or jog around the neighborhood as your warmup or cooldown exercise. Breathing in the fresh outside air can uplift your mood and motivate you to keep at your routine—even on the roughest days.

Pick new destinations and sights when considering where to take your workout next. Capture the magnificence of a sunrise, the beauty of blooming flowers, or the breathtaking sights you’d see at higher elevations, and you’ll look forward to each moment you spend exercising outdoors.

Try More Unique Exercises

It’s common to feel bored with the same routine day after day. Excessive boredom can lead to you losing interest in your workout plans and eventually quitting altogether. By finding a way to shake up the monotony with a fascinating new exercise or activity that you hadn’t considered before, you’ll have a new reason to keep up the hard work.

Some unique exercise activities you may consider getting into include:

  • Hiking
  • Swimming
  • Any form of dance
  • Fencing
  • Martial arts
  • Rock climbing
  • Boxing

Many communities also have recreational sports leagues for adults that you can sign up for if you’re interested in the competitive side of exercise. Even if you’re rusty, you’ll get better at the sport as you practice and continue your workout routine.

Maintain Obtainable Goals

While it’s important to make progress with your fitness goals, it’s equally important to give yourself reasonable goals—especially while starting out. Setting the bar too high, too early will only demotivate you. Know your limits and give yourself two goals: a more obtainable, average goal and a stretch goal. You’ll know when working out whether you’re having an average or above-average day, and the double goal setup can help you feel as though you achieved more during an especially energized workout.

If you don’t meet your goals, don’t be hard on yourself! Look onward to the next workout and your future progress. If you continuously don’t meet expectations, consider reevaluating your goals or assessing whether there is a deeper problem at play.

Aim for Future Stretch Goals

On the topic of goals, make sure to set some long-term stretch goals that make sense. A workout routine is a new experience for you, so a long-term goal with too short of a time limit—such as an ideal weight within months of working out—may not be as logical as you may think.

Make more reasonable, flexible goals that pertain to your routine as a whole; set distance goals for your daily run, weight-lift goals, or speed goals. When setting weight goals, leave the time limit more flexible—progress looks different for every individual.

Start Small and Slowly Turn up the Intensity

With no or little experience working out, you may give yourself a harder time than you need to when planning a routine. It takes time to adjust to a new workout routine and all the aches that come with it. You won’t immediately feel comfortable with a complex workout routine, even if it seems simple at first.

If you’re having difficulties with your routine, take it piece by piece or in smaller chunks. Prioritize the exercises that you want to do the most before moving onto the more difficult ones. Know your limits—find the difference between pushing your boundaries in a healthy way and pushing yourself to an unhealthy extreme. Be patient with the process, and you’ll get to where you want to be.

Track Your Workouts and Measure Your Progress

Your workout will hold more meaning if you consistently track your progress in a journal or on a spreadsheet. You don’t need to track everything; find the data that is most relevant to your goals and keep a log of it to see how close you are to meeting important milestones. When you start feeling as though you’re stagnating, look at how far you’ve progressed since beginning your fitness journey and feel proud of the steps you’ve taken to reach your goals.

Reward Yourself

Fitness is more than just a hobby—it’s hard work that often goes unrewarded. Change the narrative and reward yourself after a huge success. You may treat yourself to a nice meal at your favorite restaurant or allow yourself to buy something you otherwise wouldn’t. Whatever you choose as a reward for amazing gains or goal progress, make sure it holds meaning and will keep you motivated.

Wear the Right Clothes

Discomfort during a regular routine may stem from wearing the wrong outfit. If uncomfortable clothing hinders your new workout routine, set yourself up for success by purchasing new, comfortable workout gear. The wrong clothes might just be enough to dissuade you from continuing your fitness journey, especially if you feel chafing or blisters.

Workout clothes don’t have to look bland or boring—they’re often the most colorful pieces of your wardrobe! Find the perfect indoor or outdoor workout fashion items that are functional, comfortable, and clearly display your personality. You’ll immediately feel the difference when your exercise gear fits you perfectly rather than getting in the way of your workout routine.

When you’re new to the world of fitness, you may not consider the importance of clothing when searching for the right tips for staying on your new workout routine. In truth, your body is constantly shifting as it progresses through a routine, so the clothes that once fit may now feel smaller or larger than you remember.

At Escape Outdoors, we pride ourselves on being the premier outdoor store in Bellevue Square that sells the most fashionable and trendy workout clothes. Keep your motivation going strong by equipping yourself with clothes from our collections that are perfectly suited to your routine.
